3 Signs of an Eye Infection

Posted on: 23 June 2021

Eye infections can come in different forms. Not all are going to have obvious signs, such as discharge and swelling. Some may not be quite as noticeable to someone looking at you, but you may feel the pain in your eye. If you have an eye infection, or suspect you have one, you should get to the optometrist for an eye exam and for the necessary treatment in order to help heal your eye. If you aren't sure if you have an eye infection, read on for a few signs that you may be experiencing.

1. Redness

The sclera inside the eye may appear red, and maybe more so on one side or on the other. If you have redness in your eye, and it doesn't clear up throughout the day, or it doesn't clear up using a product such as Visine, it could be due to an eye infection. The outside of the eye may also appear red, for example, in the eyelid where either the upper or the lower lid, or possibly both appear red. If you have redness in your eyes, and it doesn't clear up, it may be a sign of an infection.

2. Pain

You may feel pain from the eye infection. It may feel like you have something in the eye if you have a stye, or you may feel like someone hit you in the eye if you have an eye infection in your eyelid. You may also feel pain all around your eye if you have a severe eye infection, or your eye may feel like it's dry and you cannot get relief from it. If you feel this pain, you can use a pain reliever to help.

3. Difficulty Seeing

With an eye infection, you may also have a difficult time seeing clearly. Your eye may hurt in such a way that it makes focusing clearly a difficult task. If you are having a hard time seeing, and you have other signs as well, it may be an eye infection. Your vision may be impaired due to swelling, or due to the excess moisture or discharge you may also be experiencing with this eye infection.

If you are experiencing any of these signs, you should get to the optometrist for an eye exam and for the necessary treatment in order to see clearly and to heal your eyes. Leaving an eye infection untreated can impair your vision further and could possibly do irreversible damage to your eyes or to your vision. Make an appointment today if you suspect you have an eye infection.
